Economics & philosophy r sciences dealing with two different manifestations of the God: a) Wealth & b) soul. You can define economics as study of nature, properties, laws, composition & classification of wealth. You define philosophy as study of nature, properties, laws & classification of soul. Study the two the way a chemist studies matter(chemistry is study of nature, properties, laws, composition & classification of matter, another manifestation of the God). After all, matter & energy that r needed to soul r called wealth. If matter & energy seize to be useful to soul, they lose their identity as wealth.
You develop ur own philosophy which is the need of the hour. All branches of knowledge r inter reated & all lead to the God, the ultimate purpose of knowledge & wisdom.
Personally I would go with Economics/ International Relations. My old boss at the Chicago Board Of Trade said that he thought Philosophy majors made the best business people and always tried to hire them. I guess it makes sense considering business is logic, and so is philosophy.
I think it is an excellent pair from the standpoint of intellectual
development & if u have a keen interest in those disciplines over & above 'what must I study in order to get a job?' then go for it. Traditionally , economics was taken along with politics & philosophy & it is still , in my opinion, a winning combination. Some of the related social science fields such as psychology & sociology r overcrowded, but with economics as a major u should find diverse job opportunities after graduation.
Philosophy is nothing more than a hobby. You do not need a degree in it to practice it. The two majors do not blend together well because economics is extremely practical & highly demanded by employers & philosophy is a joke. If u want something to complement economics, I'd recommend a major/minor in math, which is what I am doing and/or something business related. Stay away from philosophy, or any of the other goofy ''sciences'' for that matter like sociology, ethnic studies, etc.
I've only ever known one person who majored in philosophy. He eventually joined the Army because he could not find a job. I do not recommend it.
Personally, (but I am biased) I think psychology is the new philosophy. It is the study of the mind & how it works. I think it is facinating!
I do not know much about economics, but I think if you're going into a social science like that u should balance it out with a hard science or maybe an english or business degree or minor.
